Interesting idea, but... If you go to the top of Old Oswestry Hill Fort and look down towards the Gobowen road, youll see a multi-blade wind turbine thats been there for many years.

I believe it drives a water pump directly, the water being pumped to a large storage tank. This direct method provides a solution in fewer stages than your propsal, and would appear, therefore, to be a better option.

Why not connect your turbines to crank mechanisms connected to pumps, and dispense with the need for batteries?

Thanks Victor! - that worked to upload the pics.

Thanks Victor! - that worked to upload the pics. - and I learnt something new!
Chickenpicker - Thanks for info - The problem is - it is difficult to locate a suitable mechanical pump - that is self priming, small and reliable - unless you build your own.
I am going to use a small 12v. boat bilge pump - The wind charger will charge a 12v car battery charged by the dynohub - I will put a mercury on/off switch to my water tank to switch off the pump when it is full of water - so the pump will only work when needed - not pumping all the time as a mechanical pump would.
The photos are all dynohub wind -generators.
I am now building a larger turbine along the lines of Bens 100 watt 12v DC motor - I am experimenting with a couple of motors that were designed to start model aircraft diesel engines.will upload some photos soon.
Cheers! (not been very windy lately has it!)

Great work Sav.
Which of the 4 start up best in low wind?

Im guessing the green multi vane design is the best and the black vawt the worst.

Shame your surrounded by conifers, clean air really makes a big difference, even scary on top of a hill...

Hey Ben!
Yes- The 3 bladed was easiest to start! - The vawt only starts in a heavy wind (Its 4 inch cut pipe - I will try 6 inch diam. pipe soon - same height 2).
This is only a temporay location - they will be on a 20 tower in S.Ireland in about a months time.
Did you ever try the model aircraft type 12 v. small diesel starting motors as opposed to the amtec?
All the Best Terry

Interesting.
I suspect they will all work well at 20 feet in clean wind i.e no turbulence, even the vawt design, 6" diam pipe will help.

Ive never tried the model aircraft type 12 v motors, I did once see someone using an old 18v cordless drill, using the chuck to hold the blade hub and the drills gearbox to gear up the motor output to 12v+, I cant imagine it would last very long though with light bearings e.t.c
