Hi guys, I’ve recently joined the forum and I have a few questions to ask about a wind turbine that I recently bought in Germany through eBay.

A 300W Wind Generator Turbine, sold by the following link.
KOEKRAF ALTERNATIVE ENERGY my first question is,

Have any of the members purchased one of these turbines? and if so are they happy with their purchase. i.e. are they happy with the above turbines performance? My 2nd question is, how can I check that the turbine is working at ‘ground level’ before I mount it at a height of 30 ft?

I recently mounted the turbine at ground level to see what way the blades would turn and they turned from right to left? Having done that, I connected an electric drill that has a reverse gear that turned the turbine from right to left, now before I continue, there are three wires ,
Their colours are, yellow/green, white/and black, prior on taking the turbine out of the packaging the label stickers that were on each individual wire fell off ! So I e-mailed the above link, and I was informed that the following wires are as follows, the yellow cable is always plus and white is minus? No mention of the black wire?

But on further examination of the wires I discovered that an earth label was attached to the yellow/green wire .Now I like everyone knows that yellow/green means an earth! Having said all that I shall continue with the above ! Having the drill in reverse and the shaft of the turbine going like the hammers of hell, I touched every wire to see what wire would give me an electrical shock! Not even a tickle! Now I would like to ask the members have I done something wrong somewhere?

Hello turbojim and welcome.

That was a quite a chunk of text to read - I have edited it to add a few paragraphs (spaces) to make it more readable.
Simple mistake, a link to the bought turbine would also be usefull to us also.
Good luck with your new turbine.

did you only touch one wire at a time? These turbines are rated for 12 volt but even if you made 70 volts on the wires, you probably wouldnt feel it. you really need a test meter to measure the output. The alternative is to spin the turbine by hand, and then connect the black and white wires together. It should noticebly harder to turn this way. I think that Black will be positive, but again, only a test meter will tell. (Only say black, as Opel cars used black at +, and the americans use black as hot or live in mains wiring).

Hi Jim, Just saw you query and link, these are made as Aeolus models, i sold quite a few and they work really well.
Connections are as follows White=positive, Black =Negative, Yellow is just an earth which can be left off or connected to an Earth connection in case of lightening
I had one of these up , and sold a few, and they can perform really well in a moderate & decent wind, i saw 22 Amps but more is available wind permitting
I would advise you to be VERY careful fiddling etc, as if you put a = or - wire on wrong, JUST FOR A COUPLE OF SECONDS you will blow the regulator=scrap turbine!. With D.C you wouldnt feel anything unless with a huge current or soaking wet hands. As on a battery etc, Dave

Thanks very much Dave for your reply, a few questions, does that mean that I can hoist the turbine, conect the the wires to a 12v battery and away it goes!
The mast( 20ft high) is going to be mounted to the gable end of my house 8 ft up from ground level, will this mean that I will have to run the earth wire down to ground level and connect it to a suitable steel bar that will be driven into the ground? or can I connect directly to the mast.
And finally, do I need to connect a meter of some sort that will display the turbines output etc.
Kinds Regards Jim.

Hi Jim,

You dont have to connect a meter, but its is good to be able to see if you are making power. You can go on ebay and get a 50 amp analogue meter with a shunt for £20, which will do you for 600 watts@12V. Alternatively, I have a new 50A unit + shunt in stock for £20, PM me if you are interested. Re earth rods and lightning protection. Ideally, you need a rod driven 4 feet into the ground to connect your wire to. you can get a 5/8" copper rod from any good electrical wholesaler.
