Hornet blades

They just don't look like they'd work do they?
Guy down our lane with a turbine up and I noticed he was trying some last week.
Must be because there are lots of times when mine are spinning and his is stood still
I left my house in the car with my turbine spinning and as I passed his it was stood still with its new Hornet blades but in the blink of an eye they had gone so fast they were invisible
That's not a bad thing really as it won't wear your bearings out doing nothing in low winds. :?

Re: Hornet blades

They look similar to Air X's blades
http://www.windenergy.com/products/air.htm

They used to be real screamers (loud) at full speed, they have redisgned them.

I can appretiate the bearing wear issues Shawn, spinning and not doing anything, but I would still go for an axial flux design over an iron cored machine, (build up some inertia first).

Re: Hornet blades

I have hornet blades,9 blade set up, and they really haul. They are what they claim. I have a 1000 watt pma from Missouri wind and solar and am very happy with it. It will pump out 1K in 35Mph winds. It is made of a Gm alternator yes, but it's only the shell. Strong N40 magnets tons of copper, brushless, new bearings and shaft. Also keep in mind that a car alternator can run 10000RPM's! Furling is a thing of the past. These lil micro turbines can take hell of abuse. Mine has gone through 60-70mph straitline winds no problem. Screamin like hell. These Pma's will run circles around DC motors. Dc motors are not designed for generators. Good for small hobbie stuff but for some real power check out Missouri wind or any Hornet dealer. Stay away from wind blew. They are decent but they produce no amps. 12 volts at 80 Rpm yea but what kind of amps. Lil to none. Just my 2 cents on things.

Re: Hornet blades

A "9 blade set up" with blades designed to operate with how many?

"These lil micro turbines can take hell of abuse"?
"Furling is a thing of the past" is what he thought...

Mic the wire in your car alternator. Not including insulating varnish.
Compare 1000W with the ampacity under the conditions the wire is exposed to.
http://www.powerstream.com/Wire_Size.htm

"keep in mind that a car alternator" is still a car alternator.
Regardless if it was purchased from a company selling equipment that is illegal to actually use, that they obviously do not understand how it works, could probably be prosecuted for showing it connected, and their instructions for said equipment are not related to how the equipment was intended to be used when it was designed.

Re: Hornet blades

a good while back i bought a set of these horet type blades
the marketing was slick and power claims were high....
Image
these would have been marketed as 1k blades , ebay has lots of that stuff......

i tried mounting a set of 3 then 5 on a ametek ...the 3 blade set could hardly start up at all
in low winds the 5 seemed too slow but a little better ...so i kind of lost interest in the hornets (the ametek i did like....kind off sorry i dont have it now)

as far as i can tell most power generated from a blade comes from the outer third section....the hornet
blade area seems very marginal there .......

after that i went away from high speed/high wind blades ( i just have low , sometimes medium winds where i live)
........just a personal opinion
