My Garden Plan 2010

I have moved house now to a place with more solar power. The good thing is there is some good land for gardening. In 2010 I`ll do some green gardening and I plan to use LArge pots from my old house to plant tatties etc in...

These pots are super huge!!!!

I expect to get myself organised in FOOD GENERATION by the end of jan 2010..... Just getting some ideas on what to plant

Here`s my list of easy thing to start off with

rhubarb
potatoes
onions
tomatoes
peas
carrots

Any other ideas!!!

Remember I`m in Scotland and it`s not the same as spain....

Regards
vic.

Think rhubarb has to be in the ground for 2 years before you can eat it you'll have to look it up.
We planted onions and got nothing, only the spring onions came up.
Aldi or Lidle are selling seeds this week or next for 39p a packet and they are very good. ;)

Re: My Garden Plan 2010

Got all our seeds in the fridge for two weeks to snap them out of their "in house dormancy" :D
Got a lot of seeds from supermarket produce for FREE, tomatoes and chili peppers but my wife fancies growing cucumbers as well this year so I've told her to buy one from the shops and we will try and use the seeds from that. Good thing about using seeds from supermarket produce is you get the very latest fastest growing fruit and veg. ;)
We are mainly going for tomatoes and lettuce this year as its what we use the most.
Discovered last year we can use lettuce by just taking off individual leaves and leaving it in the ground to grow more. ;)
Got some fruit trees and bushes from Aldi last week. The strawberry baskets are 3" high already.
Roll on spring!

Good start there Shawn.
I like the supermarket seed idea - fast growing/ most robust e.t.c

We are fitting some raised beds here, so the temperature is a little higher than at ground level with better drainage apparently.

I'll let Monty explain :)

Re: My Garden Plan 2010

Ben, the number one money maker in our garden last year was the herb bed. Fresh herbs from the grocer are expensive, and some recipes just don't work very well with dried herbs. We plant thyme, rosemary, sage, oregano and chives in a raised bed. Basil gets planted all over the place, and whatever we can't use in recipes gets frozen as pesto. We also have a rhubarb/strawberry bed that makes the best pies. The rest of the garden is tomatoes and greens - swiss chard did really well last year.

One thing i've learned over the years is to identify plants that do well in your area and dump the ones that don't. In this way, we always get good yields and never used chemical pesticides.

You've gotta love the herbs :) - I agree, they are expensive to buy fresh over here as well.

They cost pence to buy and plant, they grow well even in a window box if space is tight.
This season as every year I will be growing, In order of favouritism/useage.

Parsley (flat leaf for cooking and curly leaf for presentation)
Chives definatly to garnish most dishes.
Basil for salads in small proportions.
Rosemary for cooking beef.
Sage and Oregano are grown but not used as much.

In conclusion,
A very pleasing activity achievable by almost all, watching things grow and and then consumed for very little money - the best :D

Oh, and if you haven't appreciated growing your own, I suspect the wife certainly will ;)

You people are contagious!
After reading the above posts I decided to grow some veggies myself.

I just planted the seeds to make seedlings, and I should have the corner of my yard ready in a few weeks.
I am planting:

Tomatoes
carrots
spinach
jalapenos
Green Peppers
Squash
egg plants

Let's see what kind of green thumb I have <lol>

Andy.
You will find it nothing more than amazing and probably satisfying - It's simply nature, far better than than any engineers of our time can create :)
It is quite something to see them evolve, and hell, it's free, well almost..

My herb bed goes in within days..
