Jim,
Posted it this morning. To connect it, you put one side of the larger terminals on the shunt in the positive line from your turbine. The other side of the larger terminals goes to the positive on your battery. The smaller terminals on the shunt connect directly to the meter (one wire to each small terminal from the shunt to the meter). If the meter needle drops down instead of going up when making power, then reverse the wiring into the meter.Email me if you get stuck!!

Cheers,
Myk

Thanks Myk for the notification ie meter,I hoisted the turbine to-day after much grunting and puffing, all is secured now to the gable end of my house. Slight breeze blowing here, south/south west mainly, not enough to spin the blades!
Kind Regards Jim.

Jim,

Have you got any sort of antivibration mounts on the turbine? I have 4 on mine (1 either end of a scaffold bar, 2 scaffold bars on the horizontal about 3 feet apart, then 2 scaffold clamps holding the turbine pole vertical), and the difference is fantastic! My bedroom is directly under the turbine (I have a townhouse, with this on the roof), and if I whisper, I cant hear the turbine over me. Sleep through it without any problem. Previous to this, I had to shut it down at night, as the vibration rattled through the whole house. The mounts are 4" x4" x 2" and are used for naval applications and engine vibration damping. Cost was £20 for a set of 4 from Ebay.
I know what you mean about the wind, I changed 2 futurenergy chassis today for chesiredaves (on here) chassis, which dont furl until 40 mph, and barely managed to get enough wind to make it change direction. Incidently, these get my vote! seriously overengineered piece of kit. As for windspeed, keep an eye on www.winguru.com its normally pretty accurate.

Hi Myk,
The only antivibration mount that I have, is the one that came supplied with the turbine a 2x 4long sleeve, thats fitted to the scaffold tube prior to mounting the turbine. I mounted the s/tube with 3 T brackets that I made. They are fixed to the wall using anchor bolts.
I really have to wait until the wind is strong enough to see what kind of vibration there is? If there is vibration,I will have to insert rubber in the clamps that hold the tube, and hopefully that will fix the problem!
Myk, is it okay to have the turbin spinning in the wind prior to connecting the battery? I have the 3 wires insulated with tape!
Kind Regards Jim

Hi Jim
The text book answer is no, you shouldnt let it spin with no load on it, however, if it is only low wind speeds (4-5 mph), then I really cant see a problem. The main issue with higher windspeeds and no load is that it may chuck a blade if allowed to spin way beyond it rated rpms.

Myk

HI Myk, woke up this morning and heard this whine

HI Myk, woke up this morning and heard this whine going through the house and I asked myself what is that noise! until I realised that it may be the turbine that was idle yesterday because of a low wind and now maybe it was being hit with a strong breeze! which it was.
Because on having gone outside to investigate, the blades where going like the clappers of hell! and on looking at the blades spinning so well I was real proud of my self.
I being a green horn on this subject so to speak at 55years of age, and always having a great interest in alternative energy.which is paramount to-day because of the global crisis ie. the rising cost of fossil fuels! anyway on having said all that blah, blah about myself! I was shocked to read in your last reply to my query about turbine spinning in the wind prior to connecting the battery your reply The text book answer is no Does this mean that the wind has being blown out of my sails and that my turbine is Kaput ever before I connected a battery?
I feel so deflated at this time!I await your reply
Kind Regards Jim.

Hi Jim,

Hi Jim,

The whine going through the house will be the vibration from the turbine. As for whether it has been damaged, I doubt it, most of the rectifiers that are in use are capable of taking voltages well in excess of rated voltage output. How fast was the wind? sometimes a turbine can look like its flying round, when its only doing 400 revs. A good example of this is the futurenergy 48V 5 blade turbine, which to get to charging voltage has to spin at 400 rpm, meaning that a blade would pass the pole 2000 times a minute! It looks like a blur when it does this. Absolute worst case is another rectifier, and they are no more than £10. Ultimately, hook it up and see what it does, but for the meantime, short the output together, or connect it to a battery.

Regards,
Myk

Hi Myk,The meter and shunt arrived this morning, thank you! I managed to snare/trap the blades yesterday evening with some wire to prevent them from spinning. Its the weather thats the problem now, rain, rain! If the weather clears up some time to-day I may get the oppertunity to connect things up! Ill keep you posted on the above.
Regards Jim.

Hi

I also have one of these Aeolus turbines the 24V version. Should I really ground it and have a dump load just to be on the safe side??
