Proper Grounding / Lightning Strike

At the risk of sounding stupid, (contrary to Abraham Lincoln advice "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt")
I would like to know, when installing a Wind Generator it must obviously be grounded to protect against lighting strike. I am installing an 8 foot copper ground rod into the earth to ground it. Where is the best location to connect it to the unit. (at the motor or the galvanized pipe)

I found out the hard way years ago with a CB antenna that was attached to my previous house. I removed the ground wire to the grounding rod since I didn't use the antenna. It took a lightning strike & fried my stereo, garage door openers, irrigation controls & my modem.

Re: Proper Grounding / Lightning Strike

I would 'ground' it at the base of a steel tower personally with a long copper conducting rod - 8' seems o.k.
That is what we had approved over here for a 1 Kw turbine Installation.

Remember, I am located in the U.K - U.S. codes/practices may vary, there's plenty of U.S. guys here to advise I suspect.

Re: Proper Grounding / Lightning Strike

hey Andy,

Ive seen an article by a guy in the US who made a copper cover for his motor, like a shroud and then grounded that. Cant recall where i saw the article but he said it was better that way as then the motor coils dont get hit at all.

Regards,

James
