Anything other than Ametek???

As the ametek 30 and 99 seem to be the favorites for wind power generators, and they are either not avialable or way to costly, can someone suggest a decent alternative? I don't want to use a remade car alternator, and my treadmill motor apparantly needs to many rpm's to be a viable option.

What about a complete windmill 'kit'... any thoughts about these?

My issue with these kits out there, is the cost, as I am working with a very limited budget.

I have more to post, but my thoughts are scattered tonight, as is all the windmill information out there. Terry

Windmill wannabe at this time :)

How about a ECM motor conversion. Can be found on ebay or maybe Ghurd.

Re: Anything other than Ametek???

Recently acquired a Jantelma 600 Watt motor/generator. I also have a Amtek 30 motor (cost 39 USD two years ago). The Jantelma performs as good, if not better than the Ametec at low and moderate wind speeds. Unlike the Amtek, the brushes are easy to change.

hi bigal77,

glad to hear that ebay seller's product is working out for you. any chance the nameplate of that motor/generator is still intact? the numbers i saw on the sellers listings look good. might be a go to look up the OEM and see where they might be used/possibly scrounged from.

cheers, dave

Re: Anything other than Ametek???

Try looking for used servo motors on ebay. If the numbers look good (volts, amps and rpms) then these motors can make excellent generators. And since they are not marketed as wind turbines, the prices usually do not get bid up that high.

Re: Anything other than Ametek???

Tons of different suitable motors out there...
The problem with recommending something is the specifics...
Never know if one version is the same as the next.
Pretty much have to keep your eyes open and have an understanding of what your eyes are looking for.
And since we do not know what continent you are on, we can not make too many relevant recommendations.
And as soon as something is posted, the value shoots up.

IE: I wondered about a treadmill motor from the Surplus Center for a few years.
Bought a couple. They worked well. So I posted it.
Tried to buy another a month later. "Sold Out". How can that be??? They had 3500 of them a month ago!
Found a catalog that was a few years old, and they were listed, and they had 3500 of them back then!
Meaning they could hardly sell them at all for $9.99 (no kidding).
Then they sold out in a month.
Then they showed up on ebay (missing the flywheel) and selling for $50 to over $100.
It was a neat little motor for $10. Not so nice for $50, or $100, especially when the left-hand threaded flywheel was removed to save shipping costs.

It was the McMillan, 2.25HP, 260V, 5A, 5100RPM.

Like mixerman said, I do have a good supply of ECMs I am selling well below what they generally sell for on ebay. And this is what they are,

Like everything else, ebay sellers can be a lifesaver or a plague. I know exactly what you mean. It's like the toy scalpers that hoard the stores then sell on Ebay for a ridiculous price.
The few treadmill motors I find soon go into the $60+ range pre shipping cost.
I JUST SAW ONE SELL FOR $130 plus $15 shipping!!!
The ones on Ebay you do find under $50 say they are "untested" or No returns etc, which gets me suspicious. I wouldn't know how to fix it if it were bad.

I'm going to hunt the outdoor flea markets & garage sales. (lots of farms here)
