My twin table leg turbine!

Picture coming soon!
Having had a dabble with a VAWT I've gone back to a conventional HAWT.
My latest creation is made from two chrome table legs bought years ago from B&Q for £10 each and used on a computer bench before becoming scrap.
The vane is 0.5mm galvanised steel secured by a single bolt. The tube it goes into has a 3mm slot all the way down it and the vane has a 90 degree bend that locks in. ;)
The tube was about 10mm too big for the scaffolding pole so I made "bearings" from empty silicone mastic tubes as described in another thread and secured them with silicone. Looks like it is really going to work.
Waiting for tomorrows wind and then it will be UP!

Re: My twin table leg turbine!

Funnily enough Shawn I've just cranked Turbine 2 up alongside Turbine 1 and am also waiting for tomorrow's wind. Not a sign of any wind building up so far though, there's not a breath.

Edited to add: First time I'll be running Turbine 1 at 24V, first time for Turbine 2's new blades, first time they're running in parallel (both are rectified and diode blocked before the junction box of course!), first time for the new batteries, and first time for new smartassed dump load using four 24V 8A glowplugs in parallel to thermosyphon a 1.5KW radiator. A lot of variables to throw together all at once, but hey, why not take a punt.

Re: My twin table leg turbine!

I look forward to seeing some pics of that Shawn
A turbine from 2 table legs.., I'm intrigued..

I am very interested to see your turbine also. Sounds incredibly interesting!

Re: My twin table leg turbine!

Its flying and putting power into my grid inverter. ;)
All seems well! moves smoothly and does not wander about.

Re: My twin table leg turbine!

A very nice example of what can be achieved Shawn for little money.
Have you got a method for controlling it, if the wind gusts above 50 m.p.h??

Re: My twin table leg turbine!

Had 46mph gusts today
It just goes a bit faster and makes a bit more power
Had to lift my cut-in from 24v to 32v with SLA batteries so my grid tie cuts-in.and its not getting up there that often. :( I need some faster blades that can put out around 200w quickly at around 250rpm.They've got to overcome that cogging though to get started :(
Could do with a smaller PMA really with less cogging.

Re: My twin table leg turbine!

Shortened each blade by 6inches by drilling one extra hole in each blade and moving them down the arms. Should have more speed and less torque I hope.

Re: My twin table leg turbine!

You could also try adding a few more blades. This would allow you to shorten the blades even more and you would increase your rpm's even more. And by adding the extra blades, you should be able to maintain, or possibly even increase, your start-up torque.

Of course, at a certain point adding more and more blades will work against you and the turbine will actually spin slower. But, if adding more blades allows you to dramatically decrease the blade length, while maintaining the required torque, then you will definitely increase your rpm's.

It is a very nice looking turbine. By the way, what is the curvature radius of your blades and how long are they now?

Re: My twin table leg turbine!

You gain rpm's by shrinking the diameter, not by increasing it.

You gain torque and lose rpm's by increasing the diameter.
