Big turbines

I've been lucky enough to get up close to a pair of commerical wind turbines, they were big and impressive (and also a bit scary when standing under the spinning blades). But they were just babies compared to the size of some of these beasties:

The sheer size of these turbines is simply amazing.

I find it strange how so many people are opposed to wind turbines. The ones I went to see were no more than 300metres from my Aunts house. They have never had any problems with them, no TV reception issues etc.

You could only hear a noise from them when up close, I didn't see piles of dead animals at the base either.

I find them to be rather elegant and hypnotising to watch, a marvel to be wondered at. I for one, would welcome one in my back yard. Rather beautiful, in the same way that old windmills (the type with sails) which were once nothing more than an industrial machine, are now seen as historic buildings that must be protected and saved for future generations.
I like to experiment with low cost DIY renewable energy, you can read about my projects on my website MicroGreen - I do my best to keep the site updated but my time is limited!

Re: Big turbines

When a country view is called for an a TV program these days be it Wallander or Countryfile there is always a turbine featured. When I see an old landscape painting now they don't look right without a turbine in the background.

Re: Big turbines

Anything rotating adds movement to an otherwise dull TV programme, I've seen it used a lot.

One commercial wind turbine visit scared the crap out of me, as I walked towards a 30 meter tall turbine in heavy fog, I could hear it spinning, but not see it, once at the base it was indeed a magnificent site.

The noise was no more than the wind noise, 'swooshing', I don't think that's a word :)
