Wood or Gas???

I fitted a coal burning room-heater 15 years ago. I paid £75 for it and I got a brand new central heating pump and a copper tank thrown in.

I took the tank to a scrap dealer and got £27 for it   I was surprised that they just weighed it and gave me the money, I dare say a lot of the weight would have been limescale

Anyway only ever burn coal in it on Christmas day just for the effect but always burn wood in it.
They must still be plentiful and cheap as most people will just think you have to have a wood burning stove to burn wood in only I can tell you that you don't and a solid fuel one works.

Whats more they are totally jacketed with water if you plumb it in as I have and it was easy. All I did was break into a pipe that feeds my radiators and fit a thermostat to my pipe so it turns the pump on automatically if the pipe gets to 70 degrees so safeguards the system. The bumf at the time said it was 80% efficient as opposed to only 20% of a normal open fire.
Wood that's bought in bulk by the pickup full is roughly about the same price as gas now is. I tested it last year on a £per£ basis. Only gas is going to get more expensive and wood does grow on trees
It also gives off oxygen when its growing! ;)

Re: Wood or Gas???

Aww Shawn, you should have kept the tank for the sheet copper to make a solar water heating panel, I recently priced up copper to make a panel and it would have cost about £200 for the sheet alone!
I phoned a local scrappie yesterday for copper prices and they quoted £1/Kg for copper wire as removed from buildings etc and £3/Kg for old pipes etc!

Hef :)

PS, what bike have you got on your pic, BMW?
Mine's a Yammy Fazer 600.

Re: Wood or Gas???

At the time I could have got a new tank for only £70  thats why I couldn't believe how much a scrap one was worth
At one time I used to generate enough wood myself for 6 weeks worth of FREE heating and hot water but I have to buy almost all of it now except for what my wife fells from our conifers. Conifers are not ideal for burning but if you leave them 2 years as we do they burn OK!
Bike is a 1000cc BMW cafe racer I built from bits off ebay so is recycled in effect!

Guys,
I'd love to hear and see more of your bikes in the easy going lounge/bar area
That's what is meant for, I also like those older BMW horizontal? bike engines.
Nice and smooth, I've never had one, more of a Vespa man in my youth :D

Re: Wood or Gas???

Nice one Shawn, I guessed that it was done in a Cafe style, I've ridden all sorts of bikes over the years, but never a BMW strangely enough :|
My first road going vehicle was a Lambretta 125, I had a Vespa too, but preferred the 10" wheels on the Lambo to the Vespa's 8".
I don't think I could ride a scooter now, having seen how much more stable bigger wheels are!

Hef :)
