Home metering system

Hello,

I was wondering if anybody has used or has heard of any good home metering systems that would give you a live feed of your total power use and cost. I have done some research and I have found some that seem to be nice although a little pricey. But they give you total Kwh and cost, and will record it on a computer for historical data.

Has anyone had any experience with these type of systems?

Re: Home metering system

It doesnt "talk" with your computer, but the kill-a-watt is available for rent in many public libraries in Canada.

It might be worth giving a call to your local library.

Re: Home metering system

Your thermostat has a feature allowing you to review energy usage (that's the major biggie, for heating) The other electrical stuff you have to figure out the "MOST DAMAGE" from the specs of each device - probably the hogs are the fridge, drier and washer. Also keep in mind plasma TV-s are more "hungry" than big screen LCD's (my 35" LCD sucks almost the same 140 Watt as my old 29" TV).

Just use common sense, you don't really need a spreadsheet for all that crap. Best would be if in your community you could use a line to dry your clothes, instead of your drier, but this is an issue in more places than not.

In the UK there is some utility company that uses only smart meters. Can't remember the name but think it was a Scottish company. :?
